VINEYARD
Grapes were primarily estate-grown from the Home Ranch, River Road, Lone Oak and San Lorenzo vineyards in Alexander Valley, and the Cortina vineyard in Dry Creek Valley.

Aggressive hand canopy management was maintained with a green harvest and veraison thinning performed to ensure even ripening.

The 2010 vintage was the coldest on record for over 40 years. Cool, wet, foggy spring conditions lingered into summer, prompting growers to drop some of an already small crop. Canopies were opened to take advantage of greater fruit exposure to encourage ripening and to stave off mildew pressure. Then, in August, a spike of temperatures near 43°C burned much of the crop that was not yet acclimatised to heat. An average of 25% of the crop was lost in 2010.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Zinfandel

VINIFICATION
During fermentation, the must was divided into three parts and each underwent a different kind of treatment. In 50%, the cap was regularly punched down, in 25%, the must was fermented in a rotary tank and in the remaining 25%, the must was drained off and then pumped back over the cap. This results in extraction of good colour and soft, ripe tannins. Maceration lasted ten days and was followed by maturation for 12 months in oak, of which 75% was American and 25% French.

TASTING NOTE
This wine has the spicy, lush black fruit of the Alexander Valley along with mingling briary and raspberry notes, and the elegant structure of the cooler Dry Creek Valley. Balanced and long on the finish with supple tannins and good levels of acidity.
