Royal Tokaji Blue Label 5 Puttonyos 2007 (50cl Bottle) Royal Tokaji Blue Label 5 Puttonyos 2007 (50cl Bottle)

Founded in Hungary in 1990, The Royal Tokaji Wine Company has become one of the finest wineries in Tokaji. From the outset, Royal Tokaji decided to concentrate on producing single-vineyard wines, made from the first growth vineyards. It is made by carefully blending hand-picked dried grapes (these are known as azsu berries). It is a sweet and full-bodied wine, with aromas and flavours of orange marmalade, honey and apricot.

The Tokaj region lies 240 kms north-east of Budapest, Hungary, situated in the Zemplen Mountains at the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers.

The soils are largely clay or loess with a volcanic substratum. Vines are approx 20 years old. Yields are kept to 10 hectoliters per hectare.

The meeting of the two rivers Tisza and Bodrog at Tokaj creates a mist similar to Sauternes, which encourages noble rot to affect the dried and shriveled Aszu grapes. One vine yields approximately one glass of wine.

The botrytis cinerea makes the berries dry and shrivel, thus concentrating the compounds and developing the aszu berries. All of these characteristic elements give the Tokaji wineries their own distinctive and unique terroir.

Primarily Furmint and Hárslevelü with a small percentage of Muscat

Aszu grapes were historically picked from bunches into 20 litre wooden tubs called puttony. The Aszu grapes are crushed, releasing their intensely sweet juice. The non-Aszu grapes are vinified to make a base wine. The number of puttony added per barrel gives the final puttonyos level of the wine, printed on the label.

Fermentation takes place in used 140 litre Gönci barrels made from Hungarian oak, in cellars extending for over 2kms where natural yeasts abound, and can take one to two years. Aszu wines must legally be matured for three years.

Royal Tokaji wines are usually aged for longer, however still retaining their distinctive uplifting acidity.

The Royal Tokaji Blue Label 5 Puttonyos 2007 is medium gold in appearance, with a fine, fresh bouquet of orange peel and flowers. On the palate it has an excellent balance, the sweetness being offset by fine acidity. There are flavours of tropical fruit and oranges with a great length. This is a perfect example of a five puttonyos wine.
