Rex Hill Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2011 Rex Hill Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2011

Rex Hill is one of the leading wineries in Oregon, with their Pinot Noir being recognised as some of the finest from the USA. This wines has elegant and subtle red cherry and cranberry notes on the nose, with a touch of spice and rose petal on the palate.

Rex Hill used to be a rundown fruit and nut drying farm of all things, before Paul Hart and Jan Jacobsen arrived 1982 and planted Pinot Noir vines, with Chardonnay and Pinot Gris following on as the winery became more established. The winery owns some of the oldest vines in the Willamette Valley and the wines are farmed in an environmentally friendly way as possible using biodynamic farming and sustainable business practices.

The Rex Hill Wiallamette Valley Pinot Noir 2009 is sourced from multiple vineyard sites around the Willamette Valley including Jacob Hart, Sims, Carabella, La Colina, Shea and others.

2011 was a year of records and extremes. The growing season was the latest and coolest ever in Oregon. There was a long, cool growing season that although required significant work in the vineyard, resulted in good quality grapes that achieved full ripeness with little or no rot. The resulting wines are rich, complex and have lower alcohol than average.

100% Pinot Noir

The grapes are handpicked, hand sorted and hand craft our wines using small fermenters and small French oak barrels and draw on years of experience in the Willamette Valley

The wine was then aged 10 months in: 28% new barrels, 35% 1-year old barrels, 37% 2-year or 3-year old barrels before being bottled in September.

The 2011 Rex Hill Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a perfect Oregon Pinot Noir. It is a beautiful, dark and brilliant burgundy red from the center to the rim. The nose has intense aromatics of wet stones, black cherries, ripe raspberries, cassis, tobacco and forest floor notes jump from the glass. On the palate the initial red fruit flavours and minerals give way to darker fruit flavours as the wine moves along the palate. Firm ripe tannins and a rich texture characterize the long finish. Although the 2011 Rex Hill Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is drinking well now, it has the focus, balance and intensity to age and become more complex over the next 20 years.
