R Lopez de Heredia Vina Bosconia Rioja Tinto Gran Reserva 1995 R Lopez de Heredia Vina Bosconia Rioja Tinto Gran Reserva 1995

You've heard of the "slow food movement"? Well this is the slow wine movement. Lopez de Heredia are not in a rush to make truly great wine and the finished product is well worth the wait. The result is an outstanding Gran Reserva Rioja; typically bright, with high-toned red fruit to complement the classic forest notes. Wonderful!

94 Points from Robert Parker

Viña Bosconia wines come from the El Bosque vineyard. El Bosque is situated next to the river Ebro at an altitude of 465m and it is one kilometre away from the Heredia winery.

Vines are planted on the south-facing foothills of the Sierra Cantabria range, providing them with the perfect conditions for ripening. The soil is a mixture of clay and limestone, and the average age of the vines is 40 years. El Bosque consists of 15 ha, 11 of which are Tempranillo, 2 ha of red Garnacho , 1 ha of Mazuelo and 1 ha of Graciano.

80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho, 5% Mazuelo and Graciano combined

The harvest started on the 9th October.

The grapes were de-stemmed and then underwent fermentation in large (240hl) oak vats using wild yeast. During fermentation, there was frequent pumping over to ensure full extraction.

The wine was then racked and aged in small American oak barriques for the wine?s malolatic fermentation over 5 to 6 months.

The wine was then aged for 10 years in American oak barriques, being racked twice per year and fined with fresh egg whites.

After the barrel aging the wines where then bottled unfiltered and spend a further 6 year period in bottle before release.

The Vina Bosconia Gran Reserva 1995 has a ruby red colour with a wide brick red rim. The nose is stunningly complex, showing all of the wine's considerable development. The palate is dominated by dried fruits, with savoury elements and fine balancing acidity. Great length and elegance
