Neyen Espiritu de Apalta 2007 Neyen Espiritu de Apalta 2007

Planted in 1890, Neyen was the first ever vineyard in Colchagua's Apalta valley. "Neyen" means "spirit" in the local dialect and represents the spirit of the terroir of the Apalta valley. This is an exceptional wine; a blend of Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a lovely streak of minerality, along with rich black fruits, balanced acidity and a firm but not aggressive tannins.

Neyen's vineyards enjoy a privileged location within the Apalta Valley, protected from winds that blow through from the west by a ring of mountains.

The terroir consists of a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, granitic soils, and a wide daily temperature range; conditions that result in later-ripening grapes with better balance and elegance.

The original high-density vineyard was planted more than 120 years ago with cuttings directly from Bordeaux. The vines have deep root systems that do not require irrigation.

Seventy-five acres of the original Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon provide the foundation for Neyen.

The original vineyards have been expanded to include the hillsides of the estate with newer plantings of Carmenere, Syrah and Merlot for a total vineyard area of 300 acres.

70% Carmenere, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon

The vineyards were harvested by hand, at yields of 5 - 6 tonnes per hectare before being fermented and then aged in French oak barriques (70% new) for 14 months.

The Neyen 2007 is an intense, ruby red colour with aromas of red berry fruits and hints of flowers. The palate is fresh and concentrated showing black fruits, subtle spice and a round, well balanced and persistent finish. The soft and mature tannins result in an extremely elegant wine.
