Matetic Vineyards EQ Syrah 2010 Matetic Vineyards EQ Syrah 2010

Matetic are fast becoming known as one of Chile's finest producers of red wine and rightly so. With a diverse selection of exciting wines that faithfully express the characteristics of the terroir from which they are produced, the quality is outstanding. This San Antonio Valley Syrah displays deep black fruit combined with delicate floral aroma.

This Syrah has its origin in Bio-dynamically and Organically managed vineyards, specifically in two sectors located in the Rosario area, both of which are almost flat with slight northerly exposure. The soil of these sectors has a granite origin, deep, colluvial type developed by the accumulation of materials. The surface texture is loamy up to 40cm approximately, lower down it has a clay type loam with good drainage with a constant and abundant presence of roots.

The plants are able to express themselves in a balanced fashion thanks to a careful handling tending to control the natural vegetative expression of this variety. The grapes correspond to the 174 and 300 clones. A rigorous handling of the load, along with a carefully controlled watering, was made to obtain yields of about 5 tons per hectare, and to achieve the perfect and slow maturing of the grape in the cold climate of San Antonio. The harvesting of this grape was done between May 5th and May 13th 2010.

100% Syrah

The vinification was done in open tanks with capacity for one, two and four tons, to be able to keep the sectors and clones being vinified separately.

The grapes were cold macerated for 7 days before fermenting to achieve a slow extraction of the colour, flavours and aromas from the skin, then during the fermentation, the remontage and pressing techniques were combined to delecate floral this extraction. The wine was then placed in carefully chosen French oak barrels, where the malolactic fermentation took place and where it stayed for 12 months before being bottled.

A wine with a very deep red colouration and violet tints. On the nose it shows deep notes of black fruits and delicate floral aromas that remind the ones of violets mixed with spices like pepper, with hints of leather and chocolate. On the palate it has a velvety texture, a firm body, but soft and elegant at the same time.

Upon contact with the air, the wine opens up and shows great complexity and intensity; its rounded tannins give it a good structure, balance and long lasting nature in the mouth. It is recommended to first decant and then leave at 18°C before serving.
