Liceiras Douro Red 2009 Liceiras Douro Red 2009

Liceiras, pronounced "Lisseirash", is the second wine of Quinta da Romaneira, produced from the traditional terraced vineyards that overlook the Douro River. The grapes, a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cão. They are from selected lots that display an earlier drinking style.

VINEYARD
There are 85 hectares of vineyard that have been replanted with the principal aim of producing dry wines and a small range of ports.

The vineyards are planted mainly with noble Douro varieties and all 80 hectares of red grapes are planted on A grade Douro Schist terraces.

Yields are typically very low, ranging from 20 - 25 hectolitres per hectare.

Winter 2009 was cold and wet with little rain during spring and a very dry summer with slightly lower temperatures than usual. These lower temperatures resulted in less evapotranspiration and therefore a longer active period for the vines during the day. Consequently, the vines retained their foliage very well during the vegetative cycle and achieved an efficient distribution of water throughout the plant.

Flowering in May was favoured by good temperatures and low rainfall which resulted in good fruit with no coulure or millerandage. Ripening was steady until the 15th of August when high temperatures and very dry weather caused it to speed up.

The grapes were harvested in excellent health and the resulting wines are full of opulent fruit with great finesse and structure.

GRAPE VARIETIES
Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão

VINIFICATION
After pressing, the must was fermented in conical shaped stainless steel vats with temperature control at 25-28°C. Extraction of colour and tannins was achieved by regular pumping over.

The wine aged for 18 months in French oak barrels before being bottled.

TASTING NOTE
Bright cherry red in colour. Fine and delicate on the nose with aromas of ripe red berry and black plum fruit. Soft red fruit character on the palate is combined with a touch of spice which lasts onto the harmonious, fresh finish.
