Le Serre Nuove is the second wine of the famous Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia estate. Produced primarily from the younger vineyards, with the same imprint as the estate's flagship wine, it combines freshness, accessibility, and softness with the structure, balance and intensity typical of the great terrior of the Estate.



VINEYARD
Tenuta Dell' Ornellaia is located on the Tuscan Coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the section of the Northern Maremma between Livorno and the island of Elba.

The vineyards extend over two adjacent areas that are separated by Bolgheri's famed Cypress Avenue. There are 97 hectares of vineyards in all, 41 surrounding the Tenuta, and the remaining 56 in an area known as Bellaria, which is closer to the sea. The vineyards are planted at altitudes ranging from 50 to 120 meters above sea level, on slopes ranging from 5 to 20°.

Planting density per hectare ranges from 5,000 vines per hectare in the older vineyards of the Estate to 7,000 vines per hectare in the Bellaria vineyards. By comparison, some of the most recent vineyards can have up to 8,700 vines per hectare.

Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia's 97 hectares of vineyards are divided into 50 parcels planted to the four varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon (37 hectares), Cabernet Franc (12 hectares), Merlot (38 hectares), Petit Verdot (10 hectares), all of which have adapted perfectly to this part of Tuscany.

54% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc

VINIFICATION
The grapes were handpicked into 15 kg baskets; the bunches were graded and selected by hand on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, and finally soft-pressed. Each varietal and single vineyard block was vinified separately.

The primary fermentation, in stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 26 and 30° C for a week, was followed by 10-15 days of maceration on the skins.
The malolactic fermentation, which began in the steel tanks, finished after the wine was racked into barriques (25% new and 75% a year old). The wine remained in barriques in Ornellaia's temperature-controlled cellars for about 15 months.

After the first 12 months the wine was assembled, and then returned to the barriques for an additional three months of aging. After bottling, the wine aged a further 6 months prior to release.

TASTING NOTE
The offspring of a warm, sunny vintage, Le Serre Nuove dell' Ornellaia 2009 displays above all else the superb ripe fruit characteristic of the vintage. Its colour is intense and offers a nose rich with ripe dark berry fruit and fruit preserves, enlivened with a delicate vein of spice. On the palate, full and well-rounded with notably refined, silky tannins. A seductive acidity keeps all the components in balance, prolonging a finish that has an appealing freshness.
