Inniskillin Riesling Icewine 2008 Inniskillin Riesling Icewine 2008

German Riesling Icewine is eye wateringly expensive. Which, funnily enough makes this gem from Inniskillin seem like a bargain. I know it may not look like it, but this is a great price for a wine with layers and layers of complexity, structure and the great acidity of Riesling to make sure the wine is very well balanced. Bargain (honest!)

The Niagara Peninsula is considered a cool climate viticulture region, and the mineral-rich soils are the result of melting glaciers that left behind large and varied deposits of gravel, sand and clay, as they receded approximately 13,000 years ago. Thanks to the warming influence of Lake Ontario and the Niagara River, the region's temperatures during the fruit-ripening phase are moderate and consistent.

Inniskillin Icewine harvest began the last week of December 2008 and ran into early January. Winemaker Bruce Nicholson was pleased with the complexities from the freezing and thawing process. Picking at Inniskillin's optimal temperature of -10 C the optimal natural sugars were attained along with good acidities.

100% Riesling

The removal of ice crystals, separated from the frozen grapes during pressing concentrates the juice which is then fined and cleaned.

As this is icewine there is no maceration. A select yeast is used for fermentation where the temperature is approximately 15°C. Fermentation can take anywhere from two weeks to two months.

The Riesling is fermented in stainless steel, with no oak used. The wine is ready to drink after a short bottle ageing.

After bottling the icewine can age for 10 plus years under proper cellaring conditions.

This Riesling Icewine shows the elegance of tropical aromas and flavours of lemon and lime. The good acidity of Riesling allows for a refreshing mouth feel with many layers of flavours that unfold.
