Gaja Ca' Marcanda Promis 2011 Gaja Ca' Marcanda Promis 2011

Ca' Marcanda is the newest venture from Angelo Gaja of Barbaresco fame. The wine, hailing from Bolgeri on the Tuscan coast, is a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese. A delightful wine that combines the elegance and suppleness of Merlot and Syrah with the austerity of Sangiovese. Balanced and approachable with great ageing potential.

Gaja was determined to secure the vineyard following extensive research into the soil type and micro climatic aspects, which convinced him of its great potential.

The vineyard area is characterised by two distinct soil types - a red soil (terre brune) which contains more loam and clay and a whiter soil (terre chiare), where there is more limestone and deposits of bright white stones. These soil types, when combined with the warm day time maritime climate and cool evenings provides the perfect conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and even Syrah.

The whole estate was replanted in 1996. From the extensive research Gaja undertook he was able to pinpoint plantings by variety, which best suited the soil type and micro climatic conditions.

By 2004, the Estate had established exactly the right mix and diversity, and the results in the wines from this time are dramatic. Today, Ca'Marcanda has rightly established a reputation of one of the leading estates in the renowned area of Bolgheri.

Promis represents the combination of grapes from Gaja's two Tuscan estates, Merlot and Syrah come from Ca'Marcanda and Sangiovese from Pieve Santa Restituta.

55% Merlot, 35% Syrah, 10% Sangiovese

Each of the varieties is vinified seperately before being blended in January/ February.

The blend is then aged for 18 months in new and slightly used >barriques!!< followed by several months of bottle aging.

The Gaja Ca' Marcanda Promis 2011 is light garnet in colour, with a concentrated nose of espresso, cherry, clove and dark chocolate. Certainly full bodied, the wine in no way lacks focus, with no lack of a tight acidity and lovely ripe tannins to provide good structure.
