Chteau de Chambert Grand Vin Cahors 2008 Château de Chambert Grand Vin Cahors 2008

This 100 hectare, 12th Century property sits 30km west of the town of Cahors, equidistant from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.The wine is made from the local variety, Malbec and aims for finesse and elegance. The Grand Vin is made from old-vine Malbec was voted the best of all Cahors by the World of Fine Wine Magazine in March 2010.

Chambert?s vineyards are situated at the highest part of the South Quercy limestone plateau (causse), at an average altitude of 300m. The soil, which originated as limestone sediments in the secondary era (kimmeridgian), is mainly of clay with a red iron oxyde component. This is ideally suited to producing a refined style of wine that is fresh in its balance and which will keep well (one finds similar soils in the Chablis grand cru vineyards).

Due to its location between the Atlantic and Mediterranean the area has a unique meso-climate which takes effect especially towards harvest when hot winds from Africa warm up the grapes, aiding ripening.

Leaf thinning and green harvesting take place where necessary, to ensure lower yields of well exposed fruit. No chemical weedkillers, fertilisers or pesticides are used on the vineyards and conversion to biodynamic practices started in 2009 (Ecocert certified).

Harvest takes place by hand. The Grand Vin is solely made from old vine Malbec, from a selection of the very best plots and from vines that are over 40 years old. This section of the vineyard has been cultivated since the 12th century.

100% Malbec

Each plot was vinified separately. Gentle extraction occurred through slow pumping before a slow fermentation with indigenous yeast (28-30°C).

The wine underwent post-fermentation maceration for 15 to 20 days at 28-30°C.

Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels where the wine aged for 14 months (50% new French oak barrels, 25% second use barrel, 25% third use barrel). Estate bottled.

Very dense, bright purple colour. Intense bouquet of black fruits with white pepper and spices underlined by some smoked and mineral notes. Very fresh and tight structure with an impressive aromatic range. The tannins are ripe and elegant before a very long finish.
