Catena Zapata Argentino Malbec 2009 Catena Zapata Argentino Malbec 2009

We're getting pretty much to the top of the Catena tree here with this 100% Malbec wine sourced from both the high-altitude Nicasia and Adrianna vineyards. This is a big and robust wine, with loads of deep black fruit and a long and powerful finish.

95 points from Robert Parker.

The Catena family has conducted extensive research into the soils and microclimates of Mendoza's high altitude wine country in the foothills of the Andes mountains.

The grapes for the Argentino Malbec were sourced from two high altitude vineyards:

Adrianna Vineyard, Gualtallary district 4,725' elevation
Nicasia Vineyard, Altamira district 3,870' elevation

100% Malbec

20% whole cluster and 80% whole berry fruit is hand-loaded into 225-500 litre new French oak barrels for a 100% barrel fermentation for a period of 30 - 32 days, allowing seamless oak integration.

The fermentation temperature is kept low, extracting intense aromas, and the cap management is done by hand to ensure soft, gentle flavors and tannin extraction. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel leaves considerable lees and sediment.

The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 24 months. Adrianna Malbec component is co- fermented with Viognier and Nicasia Malbec component is co- fermented with Cabernet Franc.

The Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2009 shows a saturated dark violet colour; the nose dark cherries, minerals and blueberry. The palate has layers of ripe blackberry and bramble fruit laced with a distinct minerality and a slight touch of pencil lead.
