Cantina Mesa Cantina Mesa "Pimo Scuro" Cannonau di Sardegna 2012

Cantina Mesa is a new project from a Milanese advertising executive who decided to shut up shop and set up a winery in Sardinia. "Primo Scuro" or "dark one" Is probably a good description of this wine, made from the Cannonau (or Carignan) grape, which deep ruby red in colour, with round and robust red fruit flavours and a satisfying, warming finish.

The estate comprises 70 hectares in the heart of Sulcis Iglesiente.

The largest part of the vineyards is located in the Sant`Anna Arresi area, in a valley sheltered from the maestrale winds and surrounded by the sea.

The vines are vertically trained, largely to spurred cordon, some to the alberello, or bush, style, depending on local conditions and exposure.

100% Cannonau/ Carignan

At Cantina Mesa, harvest of the red grapes commenced on 10th September and concluded on 10th October. The clusters were sound and healthy, since leaf-thinning and careful anti-fungal treatments counteracted conditions that were otherwise favourable to attack by oïdium and by vine moths and leafhoppers.

The grapes were picked by hand, de-stemmed and crushed. The juice flowed by gravity into fermenters on the level below, where the must underwent maceration and fermentation, for 8-10 days at temperatures between 24-26°C.

The wine remained on the fine lees for at least six months in cement tanks followed by two months in bottle before release.

Cantina Mesa "Primo Scuro" Cannonau di Sardegna 2012 is a deep ruby red in colour; perfumed and bright, with aromas of ripe, red fruit and a touch of violets. On the palate it is round and robust, with a long, warm finish and soft tannins.
