Cantina Mesa Cantina Mesa "Buio" Carignano del Sulcis 2012

"Buio" means "dark" and it certainly lives up to its name. This Carignano (Carignan) based wine from Cantina Mesa really does show its own sense of place, with lovely Mediterranean herbal bush notes underlying rich, but bright and juicy red fruits on the palate.

The estate comprises 70 hectares in the heart of Sulcis Iglesiente area on the south-western tip of Sardinia.

The climate here is Mediterranean with low rainfall distributed sporadically throughout the year, but usually falling almost entirely in autumn and winter. The region typically experiences frequent north-westerly winds, high temperatures in spring and summer, a mild autumn and winters which vary from dry and cold through to relatively mild.

Most of the vineyards are located in the Sant?Anna Arresi area, in a valley sheltered from the maestrale winds and surrounded by the sea.

The vines are vertically trained, largely to spurred cordon, some to the alberello, or bush, style, depending on local conditions and exposure.

100% Carignano/Carignan

Winter and the first part of spring were average with good rainfall building up water reserves in the soil, so the vine, which saw no rain from June through September, stayed healthy. Heavy rain in May favoured a regular bud break. Following this, there was no rain until September. June was an extremely dry month, August was incredibly hot and humid with hot winds (often Scirocco) blowing from the south.

In Sulcis conditions in September were ideal in terms of diurnal temperature range and rainfall, allowing the vineyards to re-balance. Harvest of the red grapes commenced on 10th September and concluded on 10th October. The clusters picked were very healthy.

The grapes were hand-picked into shallow boxes, and vinified with maceration on the skins and periodical pump-overs for at least eight days.

After malolactic fermentation a three month maturation followed in stainless steel and lined concrete vats until bottling where the wine remained for a further two months before release.

Cantina Mesa "Buio" Carignano del Sulcis 2012 is deep ruby in colour and shows delicious ripe fruit and a smooth character. Red fruit, herbal aromas and a typical Mediterranean bush note distinguish the bouquet. On the palate the acidity and tannins are well-balanced before the lingering, juicy finish.
