Broadbent 10-Year-Old Malmsey Madeira NV Broadbent 10-Year-Old Malmsey Madeira NV

We often think of Madeira being a bit of an outdated curiosity, which is a real shame, because if you taste a wine like this, and of this quality I'm pretty sure you'll change your mind quickly. Malmsey is the sweetest style of Madeira, but as with all good sweet wines, has a lovely sting of acidity to keep it fresh. Enjoy it as dessert and even an opened bottled will last forever...

90 Points from Robert Parker

VINEYARD
Madeira companies generally do not own their own land and they buy from a wide array of grape growers.

The island of Madeira has an oceanic, tropically influenced climate and volcanic soil. With high rainfall and an average mean temperature of 19°C (66°F), fungal diseases and botrytis rot are constant hazards. To combat these threats, Madiera vineyards are often planted in low trellises known as latada that raise the canopy off the ground.

The wine is cultivated in terraced steps of red and basaltic bedrock called poios.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Malvasia

VINIFICATION
The grapes were de-stemmed, crushed and pressed. The must obtained was then allowed to ferment at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation was stopped after two to three days by the addition of a neutral grape spirit (96%) in order to maintain the desired sweetness degree.

The wine was then aged in old oak casks in the traditional 'Canteiro' system.

After maturation the wine underwent racking, fining and filtering before the blend was assembled and bottled.

TASTING NOTE
The Broadbent 10-year-old Malmsey Madeira is a superb, full-bodied and wonderfully rich Madeira with a sweet, sumptuous chocolate-like flavours, a nice racy acidity and a concentrated bouquet hinting at brown sugar and grapefruit peel.
