Beaujolais Vieilles Vignes Alain Chatoux 2010 Beaujolais Vieilles Vignes Alain Chatoux 2010

Made in the southern part of the Beaujolais region, this old vine wine is right up there with the quality of Cru Beaujolais. It has a classic red fruit perfume with rich and bright fruits and could even be drunk slightly chilled to provide a highly likeable and refreshing glass!

The southern Beaujolais is one of the most attractive vineyards in France, described as terre dorée because of the distinctive soil colouring and golden stonework. Located just out-side Villefranche, Domaine Chatoux is located at an altitude of over 500 metres.

The vines average 60 years of age.

The splendid soils, with traces of granite and quartz, afford a lengthy growing period and yield wines of a power and intensity that is rare outside the cru villages further to the north.

100% Gamay

The technique used to produce red Beaujolais wines is a combination of classic Burgundian techniques and a technique known as Maceration Carbonique - in which the activity of enzymes inside uncrushed grapes, in the absence of oxygen, causes internal fermentation and extraction of colour and flavour from the inner skin, giving the wine the fresh fruity grapiness which is so characteristic of Beaujolais.

Typically, about a third of the total liquids extracted will be free juice, and the remaining two thirds the vin de presse resulting from the pressing of the solids. These two fractions are then blended; there will still be unfermented sugars remaining, and the fermentation still has to continue for some time before all the sugars are converted to alcohol.

The Alain Chatoux Vieilles Vignes Beaujolais 2010 is a deep purple/garnet colour. The nose is delightfully fragrant, with the classic raspberry and cherry notes, with slightly darker fleshy red fruits as well. There is a touch of perfumed pear notes too. The palate is light with raspberry and a touch of black cherry.
