Balnaves Coonawara Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Balnaves Coonawara Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Balnaves are recognised as one of the leading producers of Cabernet in Australia. This wine again is a benchmark example of its style showing a lovely blackcurrant fruit with a rich, fleshy character, but with an underlying structure of soft tannins and a nice spicy oak finish.

Balnaves` 35 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are split up into sub-blocks (some just one hectare in area), on the basis of soil type, clone variation, trellis type etc.

This enables Balnaves to programme different treatments for these smaller areas. Supplementary water can be supplied using a central computer system, but at least one third of the vineyard has not been watered for five years. The vines are trained on a single wire.

In 2009 the wine was blended from equal volumes of their Dead Morris and Walker vineyards.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

The wine spent 16 months in 100% tight grain French oak, in a mixture of hogsheads and barriques, 76% of which was new. The barrels were made by St Martin and Seguin Moreau cooperages.

The wine was fined using egg white and bottled in December 2010.

The Balnaves Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 is deep rich red in colour, the nose is intense with aromas of ripe cassis, liquorice and blueberry, combined with fine mocha-coffee French oak. The palate is quite fine and elegant with ripe cassis fruit and fine-tannin finish.
