Azamor Selected Vines 2007 Azamor Selected Vines 2007

Alentejo is one of Portugal's most important red wine regions. It is renowned for its consistency of good quality, excellent value, fruit driven wines. This wine uses both local and interational varieties to give a wine with dense black fruit, good structure and a lovely, velvety finish. A great testament to the quality of Portuguese winemaking!

The Alentejo climate is known for its cold winters and hot summers. In the winter, the temperature can drop down to 0°C; in summer, it can rise to 43°C. Humidity ranges between 20% in the summer and 100% in the winter, with an average rainfall of 450mm per year.

The Azamor vineyards are unique. The 27 hectares of vineyards are situated at 350m above sea level, they look out over a vast landscape, including a breathtaking view of Spain.

They are the most densely planted in the region of Alentejo; the north-south rows are planted 2.2m x 0.9m.

The vines grow on clay soils with bedrock of schist, one to two metres deep.

2007 saw over 750mm of rainfall during the year together with the late summer, and the grapes had time to mature gradually. It was an unusually windy year, with relatively mild summer temperatures which only reached the 40ºc for one weekend. Harvest started on the 22nd August and finished on the 9th September. 2007 was one of the best years of the decade. The fruit was at ideal maturation when picked.

51% Syrah, 25% Alicante Bouchet,,12% Touriga Franca, 12% Touriga Nacional

All grape varieties were fermented in separate stainless steel 10 ton tanks for up to 10 days at between 22ºc and 24ºC.

The must was left on skins before being pressed and going through malolatic fermentation.

The Azamor Selected Vines 2007 was aged for 12 months, in 15% French and 15% American oak barrels, and the remainder in stainless steel tanks.

Blending took place in November 2010, and bottling in January 2011.

A smooth rounded blend full of dark fruit aromas, with dense fruit and plummy flavours on the palate giving way to a soft velvety tannin finish.
