Azamor 2008 Azamor 2008

Alentejo has staked a claim as one of the country's most important red wine regions. Azamor's vineyards are planted on low vigour hillside sites, which gives their wines more depth of flavour. Alison uses a mixture of local varieties like Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet, as well as international ones such as Petit Verdot, Syrah and Merlot.

VINEYARD
The Azamor vineyards are unique. The 27 hectares of vineyards are situated at 350m above sea level, they look out over a vast landscape, including a breathtaking view of Spain.

They are the most densely planted in the region of Alentejo; the north-south rows are planted 2.2m x 0.9m.

The vines grow on clay soils with bedrock of schist, one to two metres deep.

The 2008 harvest started on the 26th of August and finished on the 29th of September. 2008 proved to be an exceptional vintage in Alentejo with the Azamor Vineyard producing excellent quality across all varieties planted. A cooler than normal season post-veraison ensured maximum grape maturity without high sugar levels, resulting in full flavoured wines with natural acidity and lower alcohols than normally associated with the region.

GRAPE VARIETIES
28% Syrah, 18% Touriga Franca, 15% Alicante Bouchet, 15% Merlot, 11% Trincadeira, 9% Touriga Nacional, 4% Petit Verdot

VINIFICATION
All grape varieties were fermented in separate stainless steel tanks for nearly ten days, between 22ºC to 24ºC.

The fermented must was left on skins before being pressed and before going through malolatic fermentation.

70% of the wine was aged in stainless steel, with the remainder being aged for seven months in French and American oak barrels.

The wine was blended in August 2011 and very lightly filtered before bottling in November 2011.

TASTING NOTE
Powerful and aromatic, with a perfume of dark red berry fruits. On the palate the wine is well rounded with lots of delicious red and black fruit flavours including dark cherry, black plum, raspberry and blackberry with touches spice and toast adding complexity. It has a smooth persistent finish with supple, ripe tannins and lovely balancing acidity.
