ATA RANGI PINOT NOIR 2010 ATA RANGI PINOT NOIR 2010

This Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is consistently ranked as one of New Zealand’s best and is produced in Wairarapa - centred around the town of Martinborough, about one hour's drive North of Wellington. This wine displays vivid red fruits, fresh plum-stone and ripe black cherry notes along with silky tannins and the potential to show its "earthier" side, with some bottle age.

VINEYARD
The Ata Rangi vineyards are situated in Wairarapa, just north of Wellington. The grapes are planted on a thin layer of well-drained alluvial soil deposited on what was the original course of the river as it flowed east to the Pacific Ocean. The fruit for this wine was sourced largely from the oldest blocks now reaching 30 years of age on the Ata Rangi, Champ Ali, Di Mattina, Lismore, Dodd and Cambrae vineyards.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Pinot Noir

VINIFICATION
During the growing season temperatures were generally lower than average through to mid-February. The crop was thinned extensively in January as insurance against what then looked to be an on-going cool trend. Gloriously hot summer weather finally arrived in March, the vines quickly catching up as they revelled in over two months of unseasonably warm days, clear skies and cool nights - a pattern that continued well into May. Harvest started about ten days later than usual, with the long, dry, sunny autumn yielding fruit in superb condition.

Pre-fermentation maceration lasted 5 - 8 days, with 10% whole berry maceration. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts lasted around 22 days, with temperatures up to 32°C. All the clones and vineyards were kept separate during fermentation. The wine was aged for 12 months in oak, of which 25% was new French. During this time, malolactic fermentation was completed. The wine was bottled unfiltered on the 19th July 2011.

TASTING NOTE
Dark cherry melds with bright, lifted red fruit aromas and hints of spice in this exotic 2010 Pinot Noir. Floral notes are present too; old-fashioned violets and a touch of rose. This vibrant Pinot has a sinuous, savoury spine of tannin that spreads out to a long, silky finish.
