Andrew Will Andrew Will "Ciel du Cheval" 2008

Chris Camarda aims to make classic Bordeaux blend wines with a distinct Washington State character. Ciel du Cheval is his take on the classic right bank blend, dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. I'll let you guess where the name comes from! This one of the most highly rated wineries in Washington and the Ciel du Cheval is one of their most approachable wines.

93 Points from Robert Parker

VINEYARD
Ciel Du Cheval is about 2 miles off I 82 near the Benton City exit, in the Columbia Valley AVA, south-east of Seattle.

The first vines were planted in 1975 and 1976. The vineyard now is composed of about 120 acres. The Merlot was planted in 1976 and the Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982. The winery also use terrific Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from this vineyard.

The soil is composed of loam on gravel beds (scootneay). The loam goes down 2 feet and scootneay beds to 12 feet or more. The soil is very calcareous making it good for vines since they have a hard time in this soil picking up nutrients, which would make for great bulk but poor quality.

This vineyard is one of the warmest that Andrew Will winery work with. When the great Spokane Flood formed the Red Mountain region, it caused a back up leaving deposits of gravel and huge stones. This occurrence created many of the unique features which go into the identity of this vineyard.

GRAPE VARIETIES
36% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon

VINIFICATION
As Chris Camarda has developed his style of winemaking over the years, he has focused on the primacy of the vineyard over variety. It is now the driving force behind Andrew Will.

Consequently, there is very little detail available on the vinification of the wine other than it was aged in 100% new French oak for 21 months before being bottled.

TASTING NOTE
The Andrew Will Ciel du Cheval 2008 displays a deep and dark nose of tar, licquorice spice and dark chocolate. Full-bodied on the palate with flavours of black cherries, plums, savoury black olives and undertones of wood smoke.
